I am delighted to greet you on behalf of the staff of the Natural History Museum, the oldest museum of Mongolia.
According to Article 1 of the First Charter of the Institute of Scripture approved by the People's Government at the meeting of November 22, 1921, it was stated that "The Institute shall be used as a national library and museum of all kinds to collect and help many people to see and recognize." It is the first official historical document about the organization called the museum.
Thus, starting from the fall of 1921, historical and cultural items, documents, and exhibits related to natural resources were collected by purchasing and transferring them. As a result of this work, at the end of December 1924, a cultural institution called the Museum opened its door to the public and started promoting the cultural heritage of the people, which became the foundation of the museum. Thus, when the museum, established in 1924, moved to Bogd Khan's Winter Palace in 1926, all exhibits were divided into two main parts: natural and historical. As of 1934, it had 12 types and 24 departments, including the Prehistoric Period, Fauna, Flora, and Stones Units. In 1940-1941, the natural part of the museum was divided into geography, Early Prehistoric Animals, Geology, Plants and Soils, Mongolian Wild Animals, and Foreign Wildlife Units.
By the decision of the joint meeting of the Central Committee of Mongolia People's Republic and the Council of Ministers in 1954, the museum moved into a new three-story building on Engels Street in 1956, and was officially named the "State Central Museum". On December 23, 1974, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the modern museum, the State Central Museum was recognized for its contribution to the collection, preservation, and promotion of Mongolian historical and cultural relics and natural resources of the country and awarded the Order No. 349 of the "Golden Pole" by Decree of the Leaders of the Congress of Mongolia’s People’s Republic.
In 1991, in view of the state policy of diversifying and developing the national museum's collections according to international standards, the history-ethnography department of the Central State Museum was transferred to the National Museum of History. According to the Order No. 214 dated August 23, 1991, of the Chairman of the Culture and Art Development Committee under the Government, the Natural History Museum was established with a collection of nature and paleontology exhibits, and it has been operating in its building and serving the audience.
Per Resolution No. 281 of the Government of Mongolia dated July 3, 2019, the Central Dinosaur Museum was dissolved and merged into the Natural History Museum to provide the audience with organized information about natural science and spread natural and cultural heritage in its current building, located at Independence Square 1.
We would like to thank you for visiting our website and invite you to visit the Natural History Museum of Mongolia.
