The United Nations General Assembly announced on January 30, 1995 that this day to combat desertification should be celebrated on June 17 every year. The day was established on June 17, 1994, when the countries of the world adopted the UN Convention on Combating Desertification in 1994 in order to combat desertification and reduce its intensity. Of the 195 countries that joined the convention, Mongolia joined in 1996, becoming one of the first 50 countries.
